Writing about photography is notoriously hard
Deciding to complete a Masters degree was one of those things that I somehow ended up doing whilst working full time.
I never did go to uni after A levels, instead opting for college and then after a while into photography. However, I have always loved education, just didn't seem to fit the mould. I took a chance and applied for a post grad, part time distance degree mostly, because I felt I needed something to back up my years as a press photographer.
Thankfully my interview was with the legendary Paul Hill MBE who thankfully understood me and the rest was history.
Part of the masters was displaying images on lightboxes at the Custard Factory in Birmingham. It really was a fab experience, but I wont sugar coat it that working full time and in education was pretty tough on finding inspiration and time to sit down and write about photOgraphy.
I am always learning, educating and to be honest, finding a way to break the rules.
Not everyone fits the academic expectations, my daughter included who is currently navigating GCSEs home schooled. I would have never predicted that one, but those who know, maybe you would! She is thriving studying her GCSEs from home via online tutors. I wish it had been an option when I was in education.
Whatever stage you are at in photography (or life), you will find a way to make it work. Sometimes, it just takes time and finding the right way that suits you.
I'm forever grateful for all of the performers and artists who trusted me to take photos of them on stage, explore the genre and immerse myself into the art of Burlesque. (even with a crappy camera at the time!). I self published a book that I still have at home just for the memories.... how time flies.
It's a box ticked in life, I just have to remind myself that I don't have time to the PhD :)

2009 POST GRAD MA IN PHOTOGRAPHY LEICESTER DE MONTFORT
While working as a press photographer, I embarked on a commute to Leicester DeMontfort university to complete a Masters Degree. Part of my portfolio at the time was shooting burlesque and exploring the genre. As a result of most of the images being adult or 18+ I have respected the artists involved and not published beyond the final exhibition and a small photo book for my portfolio. It's a subject I still continue to love.... do check out the World Burlesque Games, local events and support your performers by showing up and cheering them on.
